THE VERSIONS AND SPECS

"You can have any color you want as long as it's black." Henry Ford

Here is a side-by-side based on the pictures from the website(s). While both models are indeed the X3 from Sieg, they have different specs. The Grizzly model has appears to have a wider table and longer column.

The Harbor Freight is $999.99 and with a 20% coupon (if it can be applied) would cost $799.99 while the Grizzly would still be $925.00

With shipping added (no sales tax will be calculated since it can vary depending on location) the Harbor Freight will cost $799.99 + $49.99 = $849.98

The Grizzly will cost $925.00 + $89.25 = $1014.25

The net difference is $164.27

Update (05/12/06)! Cummins Tools now also sells the X3 mill (Item #7901) for $1399.99. They offer a choice of spindle - MT3 or R8. However, the picture shown is misleading since it's the one with the extended teable while their specs indicate the short table. Better call to make sure before you order! (Thanks for the tip G!)

Specifications (from their website)

  • T-Slot Size: 1/2"
  • Table Effective Size: 17 3/4" x 6 1/4"
  • Table Longitudinal Travel: 12"
  • Table Cross Travel: 6"
  • Motor Output Power: 600 W (Approx. 0.80 HP)
  • Overall Dimmensions (L x W x H): 760 mm x 720 mm x 930 mm (Approx. 29.92" x 28.34" x 36.61"

If they follow suite with their pricing and packaging strategy similar to their 7x (7x10, 7x12, 7x14) mini lathe (Item #5278) where it's $399.99 with accessories and tooling such as a steady rest, faceplate, etc. it's quite a good deal. (I wonder if they'll make the X3 mill yellowas well?)

Back to the HF and Grizzly Comparison:

Update (01/16/07): Apparently, both versions are identical, regardless of the specs that Harbor Freight lists on their website and in their catalog. One members of the Sieg X3 C6B group purchased one and confirmed that the specs match that of the Grizzly model. Only difference? Color, support, and the documentation. Since they are identical, you can reference the Grizzly version since Harbor Freight's documentation is pretty sub-standard.
